Club Notes – 26/05/2015

Senior League: Congratulations to our senior lads who took on Ballinamore SOH on Sunday last in Aughawillan GAA grounds and brought home another win for the club.
Final score Aughawillan 2-12 to Ballinamore 0-05. Willies Abú!!
A fast paced game was played for eight minutes, with not a single blow of the whistle until Ballinamore scored the first point of the game. A quickly followed wide by Ballinamore and a free resulting in a score, left Ballinamore leading 0-02 to Augahwillan 0-00.
The pace was set and Aughawillan rose to the challenge, Ciaran Gilheany scoring a magnificent point in play. Ballinamore fought back with gusto and the last line of defence Colin Maguire recovered the ball. Quick thinking and hard hitting Sean Quinn took the ball over the half way line, gave a solid pass to Pearce Dolan, who fisted the ball in to the goals. Augahwillan 1-01 to Ballinamore 0-02. Scrambling for the breaking ball, Aughawillan took control and passed over to Morgan Quinn who shot and scored an excellent point from the 45 line. Some tight play and hard hitting action followed and ended with Barry Prior taking a well-placed point in turbulent play. Pearce Dolan was again to score with a point after a well- placed ball from Barry Prior, while Ciaran Gilheany sealed Aughawillans lead with another point, leaving the score at half time Aughawillan 1-05 to Ballinamore 0-02.
Second half opened with Ballinamore continuing to favour the high ball passes, and although a point was scored to open up the second half, the control of the game was to revert to Aughawillan once more. Ballinamore seemed frayed and gave a free to Augahwillan who had the mighty Ciaran Gilheany sail it over the bar. Pearce Dolan set Morgan Quinn up with the ball and Morgan lifted it across the bar with ease. Sean Flanagan took the backline by storm and scored a point within play. Ballinamore 0-03 to Augahwillan 1-08.
One of the most exciting points of the game was then to occur as Ballinamore fought through the Aughawillan barrier momentarily and had an attempt at a goal. Colin Maguire pounced and deflected the ball, a Ballinamore man made a second attempt only to be thwarted by Aughawillan, a third attempt was thrown back and unbelievably a fourth attempt was also rebuked as the ball was picked up by Stephen Gilheany and cleared from the area.
Taking no distress of the squeals of supporters, Stephens pass was well placed and followed on to Pearce Dolan who scored a goal with ease. Fighting back Ballinamore took in to our defence once more, but Stephen Gilheany once again scooped in to the area with vigour and took the ball right from Ballinamore’s hands and placed it back in to Gary Plunketts who scored a point. Minutes later Barry Prior scored a point from well out in the field, with Gary Plunkett insisting on more scores, he put another point going across the bar and big brother Noel sealing the deal with a final point for the lads. Well done lads on a game well played.

Comhghairdeas: Congratulations to the Aughawillan Ladies who have risen to the top of the table once more, they are the 2015 Division 1 League winners. They beat Kiltubrid on Friday evening in Pairc Sean. Final score Aughawillan 2-12 to Kiltubrid 1-09. Well done ladies.

U16: A mixed bag this past week with St. Brigids playing Fenagh in Fenagh on Tuesday evening. The final score of Fenagh 5-15 to St. Brigids 1-05, does little to extend the level of skill displayed on the evening, but with the possibility of meeting them again we urge the lads to have the heads up and boots ready to score.
St. Brigids then went on to beat Melvin Gaels on Friday evening in Aughnasheelin. This was a fast paced game with hot tempers, St Brigids 5-18 to Melvin Gaels 2-03.
With St. Brigids, Fenagh and Mohill all on 10 points a three way draw was made. St. Brigids to play Mohill on Monday the 25th, with the winners playing Fenagh in the Final on Friday the 29th May.

Irish Times: Our former underage player and Aughawillan sponsor Oliver Sutherland was looking good in the Irish Times this past week, as Chief Commercial Officer of Valeo foods he represents a company who are to invest €7million euro in Dublin Food Manufacturing. Aughawillan GAA wish them continued success.
