Senior Championship: On Saturday evening in Ballinamore GAA grounds, Aughawillan took on Drumreilly in the final game of the first round of the Championship 2016. Aughawillan displayed a cool tactile game of calculated football. It was a marked ten minutes to the first half as both teams settled in to the game, with Drumreilly getting the first score of the game from a free. Aughawillan retaliated with some wonderful combinations of long passes, Sean Fox to Mark Plunkett to Pearce Dolan and score. Niall Beirne to Gerard Mc Govern to Gary Plunkett to Morgan Quinn and score. Pearce Dolan had to leave the field momentarily to have a cogged arm bandaged but returned with velour aplomb. Rory Mc Tague showed great resilience and level-headedness in the eyes of a confrontation of three. Drumreilly scored their second point of the game but Aughawillan went on to quickly react with excellent points from Morgan Quinn and Ciaran Gilheany in play. Combination point from Pearce Dolan to Niall Beirne to Gerard Mc Govern to Mark Plunkett. Sean Quinn displayed excellent work rate throughout the game, acquiring the ball, transferring it to Pearce Dolan and on to Gary Plunkett who scored a point with precision and pace. Gary Plunkett was relentless as he continued the trend with another point. Drumreilly fight back with a point after a free given to them. Barry Prior makes an excellent run of the field with finesse, passing to Niall Beirne and on to Gary Plunkett who scores a point and leaves the half time score Aughawillan 0-09 to Drumreilly 0-03.
The second half opened with Barry Prior and Ciaran Gilheany accomplishing a score for the team with declared self- assurance. Aughawillan 0-10 to Drumreilly 0-03. Drumreilly fight back with a point, which seems to galvanize the steely determination of the Willies. Sean Quinn acquires the ball, passes it on, there is upward movement throughout the field but Sean is at the forward line ready for the package as he delivers it across the bar with composure. Aughawillan have continued to move the score line further with it now Aughawillan 0-14 to Drumreilly 0-05. Morgan Quinn slides another point across the bar. Aughawillan excitement rises as a goal seems within reach for Mark Plunkett but was just not to be. Drumreilly are buoyant and fight back with a point. Gary Plunkett puts in an excellent run and returns the favour, Aughawillan 0-17 to Drumreilly 0-06. Fionnbarr Quinn substitutes Gerard Mc Govern. Drumreilly continue their battle with two points.
