Senior Championship Round 1: The long awaited start of the Championship has begun. It was a late start for the lads with the game being played at 9pm in Cloone on Friday evening. A large crowd were in attendance. Aughawillan got off to a great start with a two point lead, however a penalty for Allen Gaels saw them take the lead. Followed quickly by a free for Allen Gaels resulting in another point. Score line was Aughawillan 0-02 to Allen Gaels 1-01,Aughawillan quickly returned a point from a free and a second point in play leaving the score Allen Gaels 1-01 to Aughawillan 0-04. Allen Gaels earned another point from play, while Aughawillan tried their luck from an off right angle in the corner but had no result. Barry Prior makes a determined move in sending the ball up the field but their was no place at the inn and the ball is returned to our goals , defending by Barry Prior and Sean Fox is consistent. Allen Gaels chances a sharp return of the ball when hit out by the goalie and score their second goal of the game. Visability is poor with dusk not quiet set in and the lights not on, it is obvious that it is felt by the players on the field also. Aughawillan return to play to get another point. Allen Gaels receive another free and score a point. Half time score Aughawillan 0-06 Allen Gaels 2-05. Second half sees a determined Aughawillan team take to the field, Allen Gaels get the first touch of the ball but it is the willies who retaliate taking the ball and scoring a point in play. Mark Plunkett makes an exemplary catch at centre field, running and passing to Stephen Gilheany who has shown great presence on the field throughout, passing to Morgan Quinn who is fouled and a free is awarded to Aughawillan. Hard defending by Allen Gales has the Aughawillan men fighting tooth and nail to claw back control. Mark Plunkett scores a long and high point in play. Aughawillan continue to apply pressure and score another point in play leaving the scoreline Allen Gaels 2-05to Aughawillan 0-08. Allen gaels score a point but are Aughawillan quickly replicate with a point. The crowd are excitable or exacerbated with tension rising and only minutes to go. Some talk of Allen Gaels running out of diesel is matched with the chant of keeping cool and experienced, owing the field, Willies Abú! Aughawillan score a point from a free putting experienced pressure on the Allen Gaels men. Niall Beirne’s workrate is astonishing as his determination drives him forward but a foul from Allen Gaels, means Aughawillan are awarded a free and sees Morgan Quinn take the free and score.Play continues with a cry from the masses, watches are checked, minutes counted, Aughawillan retains possession of the ball, pressure mounts.
