Seamus (Jimmy) McTague 1962 -2015

The sudden and unexpected death of Seamus McTague at his home on Sunday evening October 11, 2015 has stunned Aughawillan and the wider community. His death was particularly poignant as he had just watched Ireland’s famous victory over France in the World Cup in Cardiff in the company of his family. Seamus loved sport and when it came to his native Aughawillan and the local GAA Club he wore his heart on his sleeve.

He was an accomplished footballer and came to the fore in the early 1980’s when Aughawillan were making their mark as a force in Leitrim. Although his playing career was cut short through injury he achieved a lot in a short time. At club level between 1980 and 1984 he won Minor, Under-21, two Senior Championships, two Senior Leagues and two Minor Leagues. He played for Leitrim at Under-16, Minor, Under-21 and was full back on the Senior team that won a division 4 National League in 1984.

But Seamus’s involvement in his GAA Club didn’t end there. He immersed himself in coaching and managing under age teams. In more recent years he played an active part in the coaching and training of Under-14, Under-16 and Minor teams and his work was richly rewarded in 2014 when many of his protégés including his two sons Rory and Fergal were part of the Aughawillan team that won the 2014 Leitrim Senior Championship for the first time in 20 years. That was a very proud day for Seamus and his family.

Club Officials, Players, Supporters and Friends, Current and Former Mentors and Members of 1983 and 1984 teams along with members of the 2014 team club formed a Guard of Honour and acted as Pall Bearers at Seamus’s funeral. It was with reverence and veneration that he was escorted to his final resting place.

Aughawillan GAA club would like to offer their sincerest sympathy to his wife Eileen, his daughter Danielle and his two sons Rory and Fergal. Also to his mother Eilish, his brother Frank, his uncle, aunts, mother-in-law, in-laws and a wide circle of friends. Ar dheis Dē go raibh a anam dilís
