Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Championship 1st Game:
The first round of the Championship was on Sunday in Ballinamore. The game started well with three points from Ciaran Gilheany to be met with a point from Carrigallen. Gary Plunkett scored a point and a free given to Mark Plunkett was taken and scored by Morgan Quinn leaving the Aughawillan men charging ahead. Carrigallen fought back with a point, while Carrigallen playing a blanket defence scuppered a number of challenges by the Augahwillan warriors and returned the ball down the field with no score. A challenge by a number of Carrigallen players on Ciaran Gilheany in front of the goals, was given to Aughawillan as a free and Ciaran scored his fourth point of the game. Fourteen minute scoreline 0-02 to 0-06. Some confusion in front of the Augahwillan goals as to whether the referee had blown a foul resulted in a goal for Carrigallen. Aughawillan fought back quickly reaching the 30 yard line, but again the blanket defence of Carrigallen meant that the ball was quickly back in centre field. Aughawillan were awarded a free but this was missed. Carrigallen wasted little time and scored two points in quick succession before Aughawillan had their second wide of the first half, when the half time whistle blew leaving the score line Carrigallen 1-04 to Aughawillan 0-06.
The second half began quickly with a point in play being scored by Mark Plunkett. Morgan Quinn scored a point from a free. Characters were tested with some rough contesting tackles.
Aughawillan missed two wides, which were hard fought to reach their opponents goal area, when carrigallen was awarded a free and scored a point. Fergal Mc Tague who came of age at the weekend certainly proved himself on the field with some magnificent tackling. A further wide for Augahwillan in play left the supporters despairing for a score. A free awarded to Aughawillan went wide and another in play. Shane Flanagan again suffered an agonising tackle in front of the goals but a penalty/free was not awarded. Quick play continued and a point from a free was scored by Mark Plunkett. It seemed to every spectator in the park that the next score would win the game. With two minutes of injury time, Carrigallen had a wide, which was counteracted with some hard play in front of the carrigallen goals and resulted in a wide for us. As the final whistle blew Carrigallen had a total of nine wides in the game and Augahwillan had eight, the final score line of Aughawillan 0-09 to Carrigallen 1-06.
The next round of the championship will see the Aughawillan men take on Manorhamillton next in 2 weeks and with it all to play for, we look forward to an exhilarating game of football.
