Senior League: A halt in our stride, as the senior lads took on St. Mary’s on Saturday last in Aughawillan GAA grounds. The game started quickly with 2 points by the opponents and 2 points scored by Shane Flanagan. Carrick then went ahead with a point from a free and was returned similarly by a free and point scored by Gary Plunkett. At this point Carrick snuck in a goal and took the lead, it looked like the Aughawillan men would return the goal in quick succession, but a blanket defence by the Carrick men seen Aughawillan only return a point in play by Morgan Quinn. Some broader and well managed play followed and saw Niall Beirne rising through the Carrick defence and scoring a point. This was quickly returned by the Carrick attack as they scored a point from the 45 line in play. Next ball out, saw some rough tumbling’s but as Barry Prior gained control, he volleyed to Pearce Dolan who constricted by numerous players passed to a well-placed Michael Prior who pointed the ball across the bar. This was again vaulted by the Carrick men as the ball sprung with three passes down the field and across the bar. Stiffened with resolve Sean Flanagan took the ball down the field and with a quick pass to Gary Plunkett threw the much needed point across the bar. Half time score Aughawillan 0-07 to St. Mary’s 1-06. The second half opened with strong play by the Carrick men but an eagle eyed Colin Maguire proved his worth again in the goals with an excellent save for Augahwillan. Barry Prior passed to Gary Plunkett who scored the much needed point for the willies. Resilience was further demonstrated on the Aughawillan defence line, but Fergal Mc Tague was particularly featuring, showing great grit and determination. Aughawillan escalated their efforts with points being scored by Mark Plunkett and Pearce Dolan. A short twist of fate and it looked like, like for like would continue to occur throughout this game, but it was not to be. And as Carrick pulled ahead, the final whistle was blown with a final score line of Aughawillan 0-10 to St. Marys 1-12.
Aughawillan will next play the first game of the Championship in approx. three weeks against Carrigallen. Preparation is the key to all success and players are asked to use this time to Club advantage.
