Senior County Champions: Achadh Mhaoilann Abú!! Aughawillan are back!! On Sunday, Aughawillan defied the odds of 60 to 1, displayed their spirit and determination and beat St Marys in what was possibly one of the greatest games of Leitrim football to be displayed in recent years, in the Connacht Gold Senior Championship County Final. Now, I may be biased but it was also mentioned on RTE1 news on Monday morning, Aughawillan have bridged a twenty year gap and are back to savour and relish this moment in history.
No one can deny Aughawillan were the outsiders, not fancied as having a chance at the title, but with maturity, resilience and a willingness to learn and improve, Aughawillan have come out the successful Senior County Champions of 2014. Some said we were unlucky to have been caught in the “Group of Death”, however for the Aughawillan men it was seen as an opportunity. Playing Manorhamilliton, Melvin Gaels and St Marys in the early stages allowed the team to measure themselves against the very best in Leitrim.
Success without friends would be pointless and it was amazing to see the crowds that showed up to Sunday’s game, special mention to Nora Quinn and Eileen Prior (Gilheany), who have seen generations of Aughawillan footballers reach heights of success and we were delighted to have had them there with us on Sunday to see a new generation of footballers arrive on the scene.
With much game analysis displayed in the sports pages, it is important for us to mention that these twenty seven men are joined by a back room staff of Sean Pierson (Manager), Charlie Kelly, Gary Donohoe, Christy Creamer and Ronan Mc Tague. Some names will appear more than others in the following weeks, but domination by Aughawillan of a County Final for forty minutes of a game, is not the the work of one man, the result of one leader or the game planning of a manager but is the collected belief in one’s team, the value and respect of one’s Club members and the continued trust, faith and confidence that in the face of adversity, that with minutes to go in a County final, the man behind you has your back.
And so I give you our heroes, the Aughawillan 2014 Senior County Champions who will go forward and represent Leitrim in the Connacht Club Championship on the 26th of October against Sligo, Niall Beirne, Rory Mc Tague, Kevin Mc Tague, Gary Plunkett, Fionnbarr Quinn, Fergal Mc Tague, Colin Maguire, Seán Flanagan, Mark Plunkett, Ronan Maxwell, Niall Doonan, Morgan Quinn, Gary Deane, Seán Quinn, Ryan Creamer, Declan Mc Govern, Pearce Dolan, Michael Quinn, Noel Plunkett(C), Stephen Gilheany, Aidan Dolan, Ciarán Gilheany, Gerard Mc Govern, Seán Fox,John Gilheany, Kieran O’Haire and Paul Prior. Congratulations to Gary Plunkett who was deservedly deemed Man of the Match.

Liam Gormley Cup: On Saturday last the U8 & 10’s had the Liam Gormley Cup played out in Aughawillan GAA grounds; it was a great day of festivities with a huge number of families and supporters in attendance. Kathleen Mc Dermott came down to present the cup and it was Tom Plunkett who had the honour of collecting the Cup as team Captain. That’s two Plunkett Captains collecting two cups, two days in a row for Aughawillan, obviously we have a bright future ahead of us… Many thanks to all that brought refreshments on the day.
