Leitrim Senior Football Championship Finalists 2014: Entering in to this year’s Championship competition, Aughawillan were within a grouping nicknamed ‘The Group Of Death’, but it was with steadfast determination, raw energy and a hard work ethic that Aughawillan have secured themselves a place in the Senior Football Championship Final 2014.
No one can deny that Aughawillan have categorically earned their place in this year’s Championship and this was ever evident in the semi-final on Saturday which saw them beat Allen Gaels with a final score line of Aughawillan 0-16 to Allen Gaels 1-09.
Four minutes in to the game Allen Gaels scored the first point of the game, but this was to be a game of wills on the field, andMorgan Quinn quickly exchanged points, with Allen Gaels leaving Allen Gaels leading Aughawillan 0-2 to 0-1 after 6 minutes. Allen Gaels once more scored, but with hard tackling displayed across the field Gary Plunkett was awarded a free and saw that a point for Aughawillan was scored putting them fighting tooth and nail with their opponents score line of 0-03 to 0-02.
Allen Gaels delivered a quick kick out and to be fair, some well pointed passing saw them score leaving us down 0-04 to 0-02, but with resolute calm Ciaran Gilheaney converted a free in to a score leaving us just one point down 0-04 to 0-03. At this pivotal moment of the game, Gary Plunkett showed great dexterity and skill to bear down on goal and was unfortunate to see the shot go wide. But with a maturity unbespoken of such a young team, short passes and quick teamwork throughout the field, Ciaran Gilheany was seen taking his free shot to Morgan Quinn who popped it over the bar with his left foot and the two teams were back on level terms at 4 points each. With nail biting action Allen Gaels retook the lead and scored a point but Pierce Dolan sallied an Allen Gael forward playing ball, passed it quickly to Gary Plunkett who quickly proved how difficult he is to mark and knocked the ball over the bar.
With four minutes to go to half time, it was a quick play which saw Allen Gaels score a goal, but never lying down,Aughawillan quickly regained their composure and a free given to Ciaran Gilheany is put over the bar with steely calm, disregarding the roars of the other team, this score put just two points between the two teams as they retired to the dressing rooms. Allen Gaels 1-05 to Aughawillan 0-06.
As they returned to the field, the Aughawillan faces were resolute in their wish to take a place in the 2014 Championship finals and so when brothers Stephen Gilheaney and Ciaran Gilheaney took flight, a score was all but inevitable as they reduced the deficit to make it 1-05 to 0-07. Commentators on the side line saw the steele and determination of every Aughawillan player, as subs warmed up on the sideline itching to be given their chance to play. Family connections were evident again as Noel Plunkett was fastidious and instrumental in sharing a ball with brother Gary Plunkett who knocked over a point to leave it level at 1-05 to 0-08. Allen Gaels were not to lie down and fought back hard, regaining a point lead and then another leaving the score line once more in their favor of 1-07 to 0.08.
Stimulation was not necessary after 20 years in the making, but this sharp tilt of the game empowered these mighty young men in to action, and moments later they scored, followed quickly by a second score from Sean Flanagan which saw the sides level again with 17 minutes of the game remaining. Allen Gaels secured a point giving them the lead but with solidarity Aughawillan players ensured Ciaran Gilheany was supplied with the necessary plays to score three points and give Aughawillan a two point lead, with 14 minutes remaining. Aughawillan continued to build momentum and this juggernaut of determination and strength saw Aughawillan leave the field triumphant and victorious with a final score line of Aughawillan 0-16 to Allen Gaels 1-09.
