Connacht Gold Senior Championship: While it has been reported that last years semi-finalists Gortletteragh were surprised by Aughawillan on Saturday last, it was seen by the players, supporters and management of this hard working team as a realisation of the hard work, determination and ultimately the achievement of the desire to win. The first half saw the lads rally to a scoreline of 1-02 to nil within minutes of the game starting, while an unfortunate goal renewed the spirits of Gortletteragh and saw the game take on a new level of energy. Tit for tat, the teams were well matched and feisty in a game with two halves, which saw Gortletteragh lead 1-09 to 1-08 at half time.
But with the second half came the energy and determination of a team on a mission to reach the semi finals of the Senior Championship in 2014. Scores were fast and furious, with superb play by Ciaran Gilheany and Mark Plunkett, while Pierce Dolan was always well positioned to relieve a delicate ball or place a score within the hands of a teammate. Gerard Mc Govern, Declan Mc Govern and Michael Quinn were vigourous and energetic in defence. But with six minutes to go a penalty to Gortlettragh saw them score and a score line of 2-14 to Aughawillan to 2-11 Gortlettragh, left supporters whispering for time and patience. With renewed determination and enthusiasm, the Aughawillan players rallied with great maturity to slower, intense play which saw three further points being scored and as the final whistle blew one enthusiastic supporters chants to close it down were rewarded with an unequivocal win for Aughawillan. Final score Aughawillan 2-17 to Gortletteragh 2-11.
Aughawillan will now play Allen Gaels in the Semi-Finals of the Championship on Saturday the 6th September, and we wish the lads continued success.
Minors Good Luck: Best wishes to St Brigids Minors who will play St Manachans on Weds 27th at 7pm in Mohill.
